Washing machines handle laundry faithfully till they start staining clothes, this can be as a result of negligence or a fault of the machine. Things need not get to that point though, you can maintain your washing machine well and it will clean your laundry right.

Here are a few tips that can help you get the best out of your washing machine;

Clean your washing machine

Dirty machines can dirty your laundry. Some machines have cleaning cycles programmed in them or will offer you a reminder. In case your machine does not, remember to clean it periodically, once a month can suffice in the following steps;

  • Use a little detergent and run the hottest wash at a high water level to get rid of any dirt in the drums
  • Use a sponge to clean the inside of the drums if they have deposits and remove any detergent that is stuck from the plastic fittings and dispensers.

Do not overload

It might be tempting to put all your laundry in at once. Don't, clothes are likely to get tangled in the washing machine. However sometimes the type of fabric used in certain clothes like shirts are prone to get tangled, you can wash them separately using a gentle cycle.

Remove change and keys from your pockets

These are the most common sources of washing machine breakdowns. You might empty your pockets every time you change clothes but it helps to double check before putting your laundry into the washing machine.

Read the washing instructions on your laundry

It is usually a habit that if some items in the laundry look a little like the others they are thrown into the washing machine together. A slight change in the composition of fabric could mean different washing instructions. Separating clothes that are washed in different programs will prevent damage to your laundry.

Ensure that the machine is well set on the floor

If the washing machine is leaning, it can bounce about and cause damage to your floor.

Use the right detergent

Use the right detergent in the right amount. Residue in the dispenser can be because you are not using the designated detergent or the wrong formula. If you can also clean the dispensers once a month, the dispensers will remain in good condition. If your washing machine is being repaired regularly, it is probably too old and you need to buy a new one.
